Thickened, yellow, brittle or crumbling toenails are one of the most common complaints we see at Roshan's Foot Care, and the underlying cause is very often a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). Pakistan's hot, humid summers, sweaty closed shoes, communal wudu areas, and shared or poorly ventilated footwear all create ideal conditions for fungus to thrive.

How fungal infections start and spread

Fungus loves warm, moist, dark environments — exactly what closed shoes and socks provide during Pakistan's long summer and humid monsoon months. It commonly begins as athlete's foot (fungal skin infection, especially between the toes) and can then spread into the nail, where it is much harder to treat because the fungus is protected under the hard nail plate. Walking barefoot in shared wet areas, wearing damp socks, and reusing shoes without letting them dry out all increase risk.

Signs to watch for

Nails that turn yellow, white or brown; nails that become thick and difficult to trim; nails that crumble or separate from the nail bed; a mild odour; and, for athlete's foot, itching, redness, peeling or cracking skin between the toes.

Our treatment

We begin with a careful assessment, followed by professional debridement (safe reduction of thickened, infected nail material, done with sterile instruments), which alone significantly improves comfort and appearance. Depending on severity we recommend topical or, where appropriate, refer for oral antifungal treatment from a physician, along with clear guidance on footwear hygiene, moisture control, and how to stop the infection from returning or spreading to other family members.

Prevention tips for Pakistan's climate

Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, after wudu or bathing. Rotate your shoes so each pair fully dries out between wears. Choose breathable footwear where possible, particularly in summer. Avoid sharing nail cutters, socks, or footwear within the household. Treat athlete's foot early before it spreads to the nail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are fungal foot infections so common in Pakistan?

Pakistan's hot, humid climate, combined with closed shoes and shared spaces such as wudu areas, creates ideal conditions for fungal infections of the nails and skin to spread.

How is nail fungus treated?

Treatment depends on severity and can include topical or oral antifungal treatment along with professional nail care to remove infected tissue and monitor healing.

How can I prevent fungal infections coming back?

Keep feet dry, change socks daily, avoid sharing footwear, and treat shoes as well as feet, since fungal spores can survive inside shoes and reinfect treated nails.
