Nail Disorders
Diagnosis and treatment for thickened, discoloured, brittle or abnormally shaped nails.
If you are diabetic, have any allergies, or have any other medical condition, please inform our team before your treatment or before using any product. This helps us keep you safe and recommend the right care for you.
Beyond ingrown nails and fungal infections, our clinic regularly treats a wide range of other nail disorders — nails that have become thickened with age (onychauxis), nails damaged by old injury, nails that have partially or fully separated from the nail bed, brittle or splitting nails, and unusually shaped or curved nails.
Common causes
Repeated trauma (stubbing toes on furniture, tight footwear, sports injuries), ageing (nails naturally thicken and slow their growth over time), poor circulation, nutritional factors, certain skin conditions, and after-effects of untreated fungal infection.
Why nail lugs and thickened nails need professional care
As Ms. Salma Roshan has explained publicly, nail lugs tend to thicken and discolour nails, but over-the-counter antifungal creams or prescription medication from a doctor can resolve fungal causes, while purely mechanical thickening needs regular professional trimming and reduction, since thick nails are very difficult and risky to cut safely at home, especially for elderly patients or those with reduced hand strength or eyesight.
Our approach
We assess whether the cause is fungal, traumatic, age-related or something else, and treat accordingly — safe mechanical reduction of thickened nail using sterile tools, guidance on nail-safe footwear, and where the cause appears to be an underlying health condition, referral for further medical assessment. For patients who cannot safely trim their own nails at home (a very common situation among our elderly clients), we recommend a maintenance visit every 6–8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes thickened or discoloured toenails?
Common causes include fungal infection, injury, ageing, poor circulation, or an underlying skin condition. A podiatrist can identify the exact cause and the right treatment.
Can abnormal nails be a sign of a bigger health issue?
Sometimes. Nail changes can occasionally point to circulation problems, diabetes, or other health conditions, which is why a professional assessment matters rather than guessing.
